I have found my passion against the odds in Alpine Ski racing. I love the freedom, the speed and adrenaline buzz like nothing else, in Summer I am counting the days to Winter.
I was born with Cerebral Palsy down my right side and growing up, doing sports competitively was never really something I did. I loved sports at school in recess but thats as far as it went until, I started Alpine Skiing....
I am currently the only female and the youngest athlete on the BC Para Alpine prospect team and I joined the team when I was 13. From learning to ski at 9 years old and learning to race at 11 years old it has been an amazing journey. I am now really inspired to encourage others to try adaptive skiing, I am sure that like me not many people are aware of the opportunity to do adaptive snow sports.
Ever since my first race I have been hooked on the thrill, the adrenaline rush and it was this experience that made me realize when I ski there are no limitations. My first gold medal was extra special on my home mountain Mount Washington, it was then I realized I wanted to go to the Paralympics in 2018.
I have also had a great Summer [2014] this year, since attending ‘Podium Search’ in Vancouver. This was an event I was invited to attend where athletes from all over BC took part in a fitness assessment. For endurance I was put on a fixed bike and the resistance was increased every 2 minutes. When I got off the bike the Canadian Para Cycling Team Director tapped me on the shoulder, gave me his business card and a leaflet on cycling and told me I had potential to be a good cyclist. So since then I have been training at The velodrome in Victoria.
Who knows where that might lead?
